Population estimates suggest that there are around 99,000 young people in the region aged 14-19 and it is of the utmost importance to the successful implementation of the Regional Economic Strategy that they are prepared for success in life and possess the type of skills that the region needs to fulfil its potential.
The Commission is committed to helping create relationships of the highest quality between employers and education organisations to ensure that this happens and young people are equipped with the skills they need.
This type of joint work between employers and education organisations is often referred to as ‘employer engagement’.
The Make it Count Campaign is the result of a year long research and consultation programme with regional employers and education organisations which was undertaken during 2008/09.
The data we obtained is shaping the Commission’s forward agenda in the area of 14-19 employer engagement activities.
This work is just the beginning of a bigger dialogue that is required around the subject of employer engagement and we will be undertaking further work in this area during 2009.
Through the Make It Count Campaign, we are calling upon employers – at whatever level they choose to engage with 14-19 year olds – to make the experience count, and provide a worthwhile return on their investment of time and that of the students involved.
