A Levels and GCSE Reforms
This section briefly outlines the changes to A levels and GCSE from September 2008, with links to key websites.
A levels
All of the awarding bodies have redeveloped A Levels for first teaching September 2008 (excluding GCE Maths - first teaching from September 2011) in line with the revised QCA subject criteria. The changes are designed to:
• Reduce the amount of assessment for teachers and learners, and internal marking for teachers
• Ensure reliability and fairness
• Include stretch and challenge to help all young people maximise their potential
• Help universities differentiate between HE applicants.
A detailed outline of these changes is available at DCSF – Changes to A Level
GCSEs
DCSF are continuing to expand the range of Applied GCSEs, formerly known as GCSEs in vocational subjects. These may be taken as part of the new Diploma or alongside other GCSEs. Pilots in Construction and the Built Environment; Hospitality and Catering; Media; and Applied PE are ongoing. It is anticipated that all these subjects will be available for teaching by September 2009.
In addition, from 2012 onwards, achieving Level 2 Functional Skills will be essential for gaining A*-C in English, Mathematics and ICT GCSE.
Further details, including changes to coursework and qualification and subject criteria, are available on the DCSF website – DCSF-GCSE and through the QCA website - QCA-Changes to GCSE 2009-10
