Engaging Employers

In improving the aspirations and attainment of young people, it is vital to establish links with employers and the world of work at an early age in order to highlight the opportunities available to them. The Government’s 14-19 reform programme presents a considerable challenge to partnerships between learning providers and employers.

The 14-19 Commission has identified this as a key priority and is keen to assess ways in which employers could be engaged in this agenda to align educational attainment to the economic needs of the region and raising young people's aspirations.

The primary objective of engaging employers in 14-19 learning is to improve the North East regional skills base both for the current and the future workforce through the development of learning programmes that are relevant to learners and meet employer needs. In achieving this objective, there is an urgent need to develop both a clear offer to employers and to clarify the many ways in which employers can and should engage.

The first stage of this work is well underway, which aims to provide an accurate regional profile of current employer engagement with schools, colleges, training providers, universities and many other groups in the region. The results of this work will create a clearer offer to employers, setting out the business and sector opportunities intrinsic to engagement.
