Labour Market Intelligence (LMI)
Local 14-19 Partnerships recognise that learning provision planners, teachers and practitioners and young people and their parents need an understanding of the trends in the regional labour market. This section sets out to provide the key sites that provide national, regional or local demographic and/or LMI.
National Sources
The UK Statistics Authority - the home of the official UK statistics on the economy and society.
NOMIS – run by University of Durham for the Office of National Statistics (the Executive Office of the National Statistics Authority), NOMIS provides a range of information on the UK Labour Market, providing a range of data at Local Authority and Ward level.
The National Employers Skills Survey 2007 is an annual survey commissioned by the Learning and Skills Council, the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Sector Skills Development Agency (SSDA). It provides an insight into employer’s views of skills deficiencies and workforce development.
Regional Sources
Skills North East has developed a guide to Labour Market Information, and has published a series of Sector Fact Sheets which give information on the range of jobs available in the region.
The North East Regional Information Partnership (NERIP) is the region’s observatory, providing underpinning information for strategic developments cross the region. The NERIP site also provides links to many other sources and providers of economic information around the region
Examples of LMI and Population information reports on LMI are the Annual LMI Report, and a briefing on Demographic Change
The North East Higher Skills Network, NEHSN, a partnership of all of the region’s universities and FE colleges. sets out to raise the overall skills levels and address skills shortages in the region. The site, and particularly its subscription newsletter provides valuable, up-to-date regional LMI briefings.
Local Information
Local Authorities develop and maintain demographic and labour market profiles for their areas. Most of these provide access through their LA websites.
An example of sub-regional information is a report on Skills Issues in Tees Valley. This was presented through the Redcar and Cleveland 14-19 Partnership to Education and Training Providers, providing an insight in to the LMI issues within the local area and the Tees Valley sub-region. See Supporting Documents and Downloads for the report.
As further reports and sources of information become available, these will be added to the site.
