Dorothy Smith
Regional Director - Learning Planning & Performance, LSC, representing Learning and Skills Council North East
Following her secondary education at Berwick Grammar School Dorothy obtained an honours degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Dundee. In 1990 she did a Masters degree in Language and Sociology at Newcastle University. Dorothy spent fifteen years lecturing in further education colleges (teacher education and business studies), then took on whole college curriculum development roles, initially at Northumberland College, then at Newcastle College as Director of Curriculum. She then spent two years in an educational consultancy role, notably as Assistant Principal (Curriculum) with a college in pre-merger discussions, and with the Further Education Funding Council during the transition to the Learning and Skills Council.
Dorothy joined the LSC in June 2001 as Head of Learning Policy. She was appointed to the role of Regional Director Learning, Planning and Performance in April 2006, taking a national role in 14-19 and higher education/higher level skills development.
Dorothy is currently working closely with the Department for Children, Schools and Families on Machinery of Government changes and has also taken on line management responsibilities for Area South partnership teams.
