Information, Advice and Guidance

High quality Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) is essential for individuals and employers if they are to make the right decisions about their careers.  The Regional IAG Board (see below) is investigating ways in which we can deliver the best information to underpin and support  IAG practitioners.

Adult Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) in the North East

The White paper 21st Century Skills, Realising our Potential (2003) highlighted the need for high quality and easily accessible information, advice and guidance (IAG) for adults to meet the skills challenge facing Britain.

More recently the Leitch  Report - World Class Skills (July 2007) will ensure that every adult has easy access to skills and careers advice that will help them find work and progress in their careers.

In the North East, IAG is available from a number of sources which include the internet, schools, colleges, community learning as well as many centres which have been established to help the unemployed get back into work.  Some of these have been listed on the links page.

Regional IAG Board

Introduction

Skills North East established a Regional IAG Board to ensure that IAG provision effectively contributes to raising the skills levels of the people in the North East.

The Board is also a response to employer and practitioner demand for high quality and timely IAG.  Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) is an important element of successful IAG and the Board will be considering how LMI can be improved.

The Regional IAG Board, led by the LSC, has established a vision, purpose and objectives to frame developments.

Vision

To ensure that high quality and impartial information, advice and guidance will be readily available to people in the North East to enable them to fulfil their potential in learning and work.

Purpose

To act as a means of consulting with and of seeking the views of regional stakeholders and partners. This process will contribute to the development and implementation of policy for IAG within the North East region.

Working within the context of the Skills Strategy, the role of the Board is to develop a strategy to achieve the IAG vision.

The Board will have an overview of sub regional IAG Strategic Plans in order to identify gaps in the service and advise on how resources should be directed to ensure a consistent standard of service, and adds value to current provision.

Objectives

The principal objectives of the Regional IAG Board are:

  • Set the strategic direction for IAG delivery in the North East to support the Regional Economic Strategy
  • Explore how funding streams and services either complement each other or could be targeted more effectively
  • Identify and monitor effective impact measures for IAG within the context of the national review of IAG
  • Support the local IAG Strategic Boards in the implementation of local/regional IAG strategy
