Working in partnership, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) promotes and funds high-quality, cost-effective teaching and research, meeting the diverse needs of students, the economy and society.

HEFCE recently consulted on the approach it is taking to support the development of new higher education centres in the light of the Government's policy framework set out in the DIUS publication 'A new "University Challenge'.
HEFCE has provided a report on understanding higher education (HE) institutional performance as part of a government debate about the future development of HE. The debate, launched by John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, comprises a collection of nine commissioned reports designed to stimulate discussion about the future of HE, and inform a framework for the next 10 to 15 years. HEFCE's contribution examines how to better understand and measure institutional performance, and the possible performance measures of quality, while recognising the idiosyncrasies of individual missions. It also recommends ways to present a fuller picture of the sector's diverse contribution to society. Debate on the Future of Higher Education
